One of these products is EJSS-CILL. It is an EJ Smart Saver, model Commercial / Industrial Lighting Load unit, supplied in single or three phase load connection.

As can be seen, this unit is basically for saving electrical energy consumption in gas discharged lamp lighting like Fluorescent lamps, Mercury vapor lamps, Sodium vapor lamps etc. A saving of 20% to 35% can be achieved using this unit, depending upon the incoming current parameters.

EJSS-CILL is supplied as air cooled for lower KVA range and as oil cooled for higher KVA range.

It is supplied as a minimum of 6 KVA in single phase and 6 x 3 = 18 KVA in three phase, depending upon on the incoming connection to the lighting load.

As it is basically an electrical device compared to electronic devices the life of the unit is more than 10 years.

It has specially designed transformers with heat insulating material. Automatic tap selector is provided to make the unit function at optimum level 24 hrs a day. Digital kW meter along with the changeover switch which is provided, makes checking of the saving instantaneous. Wheels and lifting eye are provided to move the unit easily.

Apart from saving energy it considerably reduces the heating of chokes used in lamps. The unit is eligible for 100% depreciation in the first year of investment itself (as per IT rules currently in force). Payback period for this unit is within around 12 to 18 months or earlier (if lights are 'ON' continuously). It also prolongs the life of fluorescence in all gas-discharged lamps.

How it works

In gas discharge lamps, to commence the ignition a higher current is required. To generate the higher current, control gear, like chokes are used in the circuit also consuming additional energy apart from the lamp's wattage. The unit introduces a loss less impedance in the lighting circuit, which reduces the working current of the lamp without affecting the starting conditions. This result in a considerable saving in electrical energy which otherwise would have been wasted in the chokes and other circuitry.

Though the tube manufacturers data gives the light output v/s electrical input at the specified voltage, the operating characteristics in a normal operating environment usually drives more current through the discharge than rated. It can be seen that the efficiency of the lamp drops faster due to multiple excitation at higher currents. By introducing the unit in the circuit the operating current of the lamp will get reduced to an optimum level for maintaining the discharge in gas discharge lamps. This increases the operating efficiency of the lamp and also reduces the frequent replacement of bulbs.
